Into The Wild

"Make a radical change in your lifestyle and begin to boldly do things which you may previously never have thought of doing, or been too hesitant to attempt. So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservation, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. If you want to get more out of life, you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-skelter style of life that will at first appear to you to be crazy. But once you become accustomed to such a life you will see its full meaning and its incredible beauty.”
― Jon Krakauer, Into the Wild

It's been quite some time since I've blogged. I have to admit, I have been busy adjusting to life as a full time entrepreneur. It has been rough; but God has been so faithful!  Living on the edge has done so much for me in just a few short weeks. This beautiful quote by Jon Krakauer completely illustrates what taking the leap has done for me.

As a child I was trained to go to school, get a job with great benefits, follow all the rules, save, save, save. Go to church weekly, pay my tithes, go on vacation once a year- so on and so forth. I lived that life for several years too many. After moving the New York Tri-state area and being undervalued, underappreciated and working well beneath my potential at a 9-5 job, I finally mustered up the gall to walk away from that life and go, into the wild.

If you've ever read or watched the story, Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, you'd know just what I'm talking about. Chris McCandles is the main character and like me, he was raised in a traditional, Suburban American town with upper middle class parents who trained him to make all the "right," decisions. After he completed school, he gave all his savings  (over $20K) to charity, sold his, car and walked away from the life he was destined to pursue. His journey was told through journalists' Jon Krakauer work and the Feature film"Into the Wild."

Like Chris, I became so frustrated with the life I was supposed to live. After sitting before the Lord in deep meditation and prayer I felt the Lord had impressed upon me to walk away from my job and pursue my passion. Which includes sharing my story with readers like you. Unfortunately, I didn't/don't have $20,000 like Chris or any extra money to fall back on, all I had (have) is Jesus. On April 30, 2017 I submitted my two week notice and the following week I scheduled my exit interview, turned in my badge and never looked back.

Well, not entirely (lol). I was sure my business would skyrocket the minute I was officially a full time entrepreneur. Although, that didn't exactly happen. I never felt more free and liberated than when I broke free from the chains and demands of 9-5 work and dived head first into my passions.

The truth of the matter, I was severely unhappy in my previous work. Everyday I spent working for someone else was precious time away from MY business and my children- the work that truly fulfills me. Since walking into the wild I have finally been able to walk by faith. Not knowing where money is coming from CAN be scary yet somehow someway the Lord ALWAYS makes a way. He has allowed unexpected checks to come in the mail, given me access to benefits I otherwise was not entitled to, and opened and closed so many doors that have allowed my business to expand.

When I was working I was actually so much more worried. I was always striving. Striving to please my boss, co-workers and all the people I served. I couldn't just go for a walk when I wanted, or take a drive. I was overworked and underpaid, unengaged. What kind of life is that? Contrarily, as a self-employed entrepreneur I have the honor to use both the left AND right side of my brain, go for as many walks as I like, change my kids diapers, cook and clean and do more of what I love.

One point that is important for me to make is that my situation IS far from perfect. Just because I've gone into the Wild does not mean that everything is rosey. My bank account is not overflowing. I still have a significant amount of stock that has yet to be ordered and the truth is working for yourself is hard. My freedom has not come due to so-called "financial freedom," (which in my opinion is FALSE). Instead, it's come because I trust God. Where he leads I follow, he gives me peace when I don't know how ends are going to meet. I remind him of his promise, and He reassures me of his promise. He has been faithful every single month. This new lifestyle has revealed how good and faithful he really is. It's revealed that if we rely on Him he will show up.

There are so many times I wake up frustrated, mostly because I don't understand WHY it's taking so long for his promises to manifest. He then gently reminds me that I must humble myself in his sight. Submit myself to his will, and let his plans- that are so good, prevail.

My radical change, wasn't really that radical. I just took a step of faith and put my trust in God. Allowing Him to finally take control of my life and put on the mind of Christ. The mindset that he will take care of me, so for that reason I don't HAVE to worry all the time and work at a job just to get a pension that may or may not be there when I retire. Never have I seen the righteous forsaken nor his seed begging bread.

I want to challenge you too. Make a radical change in your life. You have power and authority to change your situation. God has not called you to be unhappy. The Lord has called us to be happy and prosperous. The one thing he asks of you, is to have Faith in Him. Faith requires actions which are usually just faith filled steps. He has called and equipped you.

As you venture into the wild, your life will become this fun-filled, joyful adventure. It will transform wanderlust into wonderful. As you lean on the Lord you'll be more thankful, humble, and grateful because you'll know that The Lord is the power that fuels your life, strength and provides for you. With each new experience you'll wonder- "why didn't I do this sooner?" Remember: jobs, bank accounts, and regular paychecks only create an illusion of security. The 9-5 lifestyle creates a sense of desperate reliance on the world's VERY insecure systems. Big companies go bankrupt and people lose their jobs everyday. It is much more secure to live by faith, be a good steward over the blessings the Lord grants and carefully follow the leading of the Lord. Surely it sounds crazy! I know I sounded crazy, I still look crazy as family asks how I do it, why I did it and whether it's worth it. To that my answer is, absolutely! I have never been so alive, so excited for this adventure!

For this reason, I want you to take a step with me. What have you been waiting for? What are you believing God for? What is your dream? You have the power and authority to dream big. Go, into the Wild!
